It’s a well-known fact that language barriers can lead to some amusing situations, especially when you’re guiding tourists from all over the world. Over the years, I’ve had my fair share of hilarious moments that have become the stuff of legend among our tour groups.
One sunny afternoon, we were on our way to the viewpoint at Koh Phi Phi, and a tourist asked me in broken English, “How long to the top?” I confidently replied, “About 20 minutes if we walk slowly.” He looked puzzled and said, “Slow? But you said it’s a short trip!” After a bit of back-and-forth, I realized he thought I said “snail” trip instead of “short” trip. We all had a good laugh and continued our “snail-paced” journey to the top.
Another memorable incident was when I was teaching a group some basic Thai phrases. One of the tourists tried to say “sawasdee” (hello) but ended up saying “sawadee” (goodbye) instead. Every time we met someone, they would cheerfully say “goodbye” instead of “hello,” much to the confusion of the locals. By the end of the day, we had all adopted the quirky greeting, and it became an inside joke for the rest of the tour.
Food can be another source of confusion and amusement. During a lunch break, a tourist asked me to recommend a local dish. I suggested “Pad Krapow,” a popular Thai stir-fry. He nodded enthusiastically and ordered “Pad Crapow.” The waiter and I couldn’t help but chuckle, and after a quick correction, the tourist enjoyed one of the best meals of his trip. We still laugh about his near miss with ordering something completely different!
Signs can also lead to funny moments. Once, while preparing for a tour, I printed a sign that was supposed to say “Welcome to Koh Phi Phi!” but due to a typo, it read “Wellcome to Koh Phi Phi!” One of the tourists pointed it out with a big grin, and we decided to leave it as it was for the day. It became a running joke, with everyone exaggerating their “Wellcomes” as we visited different spots on the island.
Gestures can be a lifesaver when words fail, but they can also lead to funny misunderstandings. During a snorkeling trip, I tried to demonstrate the “okay” hand signal used underwater. One tourist misunderstood and thought it meant “come here.” So, every time I gave the “okay” sign, he would swim towards me, making everyone laugh. It took a few tries, but we eventually got it right and had a fantastic snorkeling experience.
